Minister must intervene to reinstate vital bus route – Parsons

Local Cllr Evelyn Parsons has called on the Minister for Transport to immediately intervene in the reinstatement of a multi-stop bus services along the Galway-Ballinasloe-Dublin route. This follows the decision by the National Transport Authority not to introduce a new route to following Aircoach’s decision to cease operating on the route.

Tender issued for design of new elective hospital in Merlin Park – Naughton

The HSE has issued a ‘request for tender’ for Phase 1 of the new elective hospital in Merlin Park in Galway. This tender is for an architect-led design team to provide architectural, design and engineering services and for a Project Control Team to support the HSE to manage, control and administer the design/construction programme. The HSE intends that the teams will be in place in the summer.

Welcoming the news, Minister Hildegarde Naughton said that the news is a significant step on the road to better healthcare for the people of Galway and the West,” the Minister said.

Parsons seeks housing support for returning Irish emigrants

A scheme that would facilitate housing for Irish born emigrants who wish to return home has been proposed by Cllr. Evelyn Parsons.

The scheme would see Galway County Council agree to provide one age-friendly property per year in each electoral area to a returning Irish emigrant who has been approved by Safe Home Ireland, a not-for-profit charity which facilitates the desire for older Irish people to return home. The returning emigrant would also have their housing need assessed by the local authority and be approved for the social housing list.

Marine Institute commits to ambitious climate targets with installation of solar PV systems

In late 2023, the Marine Institute launched its second updated Climate Action Roadmap. Sustainability and meeting climate challenges are core to the Marine Institute strategy, Ocean Knowledge that Transforms and Inspires, which results in priority, impetus and resourcing being given to delivery of the Climate Action Roadmap. The Roadmap outlines the project pipeline and operational measures being taken to work towards ambitious 2030 and 2050 climate targets.

As part of this, the Institute sought to enhance its decarbonisation programme. The Marine Institute is now generating onsite renewable energy having installed two solar PV rooftop systems. 783 panels, producing up to 291,611 kWh/year of electricity, have been installed in the Institute’s Oranmore, Co. Galway Headquarters and a smaller 76 panel system, producing c. 29,395 kWh per year, was installed in the Newport, Co. Mayo facilities.
